Why did you choose to march with the Blue Knights? The 2014 San Antonio show was the first time I ever got to watch drum corps live. There were many incredible shows and corps that year, and one that truly struck me was “That One Second” by the Blue Knights. I instantly became a fan and knew that it was a corps I had to audition for. What cemented my desire to march at BK were the personal testimonies of my friends that performed with the group. They not only grew as performers, but experienced and created countless memories and relationships. Excellence in not only performance, but character, is the mantra they all shared – and that is what I experienced during my year with the corps. Everyone I met before and during my time at BK were some of the most loving, caring, inspiring, and hardworking individuals that I have ever been around. I knew that it was a place I wanted to be in and pour my heart into, and I am glad for all the friends I had that inspired to make the jump
I have had many great teachers throughout my life, but marching at Blue Knights was the first time where I felt like our humanity as students were truly empowered. It helped that our show was designed to do that, but I picked that up from the very first audition. Above all else, BK sought to bring people that were excellent in character, and strived to provide members with a great culture. Those two things produce great results, and are the two main things I’ve looked to nurture in my students as a current music educator. I preach to my students that strong character, altruism, and a strong work ethic will bring about desirable results. It’s been true each and every year so far.Have another Blue Knights Alumni Corps reunion!
