DPS Drum Clinic Returns with Harvey Thompson of BYOS

DENVER, CO – Ascend Performing Arts and Denver Public Schools will host another Denver Day of Drum Line Clinic for all drum lines in the DPS school district on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Bruce Randolph School (map). This Ascend Education clinic is brought in part by KHS America “Academic Alliance” (academicalliance.com) and Mapex Percussion (mapexdrums.com).

“As part of our mission, we continue to look for ways to promote and support the performing arts in the Rocky Mountain region,” said Mark Arnold, Executive Director of Ascend Performing Arts. “Partnering with Denver Public Schools has been a great way to build up the excitement of music at an early age.”

The drum clinic will feature clinic sessions hosted by the Blue Knights percussion staff, the Blue Knights World Percussion Ensemble (BKPE.org), and featured clinician Harvey Thompson of BYOS (www.byos1191.com) from Brooklyn, NY, is the co-Owner of BYOS, LLC. Harvey is also the Percussion Director at North Carolina A&T University, as well as, travels in Europe and South America with the band SEEED.

The Denver Day of Drum Line clinic–sponsored by Ascend Performing Arts, Denver Public Schools, Mapex Marching Percussion, Vic Firth, Remo, and Zildjianis a day of camaraderie and unparalleled instruction for anyone from middle school to high school who is looking for an experience that serves a lifetime. This drum clinic is open to battery performers at any skill level in Denver Public Schools.

“This event is going to be a great opportunity for our DPS students to get to work with some of the best clinicians and performers in the world,” said Jason U’Ren, Director of the Denver Citywide Marching Band. “The entire drumming activity has much more to offer than just the entertainment value. It can teach problem-solving, determination, teamwork, and resilience in a way that students cannot always get in a classroom setting. This is a great way to get our DPS students drumming together with the professionals!”

All clinic participants will receive:

  • World class instruction by some of the best in the activity
  • FREE lanyard

What to bring:

  • Battery participants are highly encouraged to Bring Your Own Drum (BYOD) and Bring Your Own Sticks (BYOS).

Clinic Fees: There are no clinic fees for the members of the DPS drum lines who participate in this clinic with the Blue Knights. Registration will be done through Denver Public School music directors. DPS percussionists should discuss any questions or concerns with their instructors.
