Shane Roderick

Dr. Shane Roderick (b. 1998) is a percussionist, composer, and educator based in Midland/Odessa, Texas, where he serves as Director of Percussion Studies at the University of Texas Permian Basin.

As a performer, Shane maintains an active career across solo, chamber, orchestral, and contemporary percussion. He is an avid proponent of performing both his own compositions and significant works from the percussion repertoire and has collaborated with artists including arx duo, Svet Stoyanov, and Ji Hye Jung. His performance credits include Carnegie Hall, where he performed the chamber and large-ensemble music of Gabriela Ortiz, as well as appearances with the New World Symphony and Nu Deco Ensemble. Through these ensembles and other engagements, he has performed alongside artists including Ray Chen, Ben Folds, Pat Metheny, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Time for Three, and GRAMMY-nominated vocalist Ledisi.

Shane was awarded second place in the duo division and fourth place in the solo division of the 2022 Great Plains International Marimba Competition. Additional honors and appearances include the 2019 PASIC All-Star Ensemble under James Campbell and a performer position in the 2021 Percussive Arts Society/PMA Honors Recital at Lamar University. His marching arts performance experience includes World Class organizations such as the Bluecoats, Blue Knights, Monarch Independent, and Colts.

As a composer, Shane’s works have been performed internationally, including at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC), and have been purchased by performers throughout the United States and abroad, including in Chile, China, Italy, Ireland, Japan, and Taiwan. A significant portion of his creative work focuses on electroacoustic percussion repertoire designed to function without the use of a click track, an approach he continues to explore in both solo and chamber settings through collaborations with artists such as arx duo. His catalog also includes acoustic solos, chamber works, multidisciplinary compositions, concerti, and marching percussion arrangements. He currently arranges for the James Madison University Marching Royal Dukes percussion section, self-publishes through his own catalog, and is also published by Cangelosi Publications. His composition mentors include Casey Cangelosi and Dr. Charles Mason.

As an educator, Shane has presented masterclasses and clinics at universities and public schools throughout the United States. Prior to joining UTPB, he taught applied percussion and coached chamber music at the Frost School of Music, maintained a private teaching studio, and served on the percussion faculty at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. While at James Madison University, he instructed the Marching Royal Dukes percussion section as a graduate assistant. Within the marching arts, he currently works with the Blue Knights Drum & Bugle Corps and has previously taught with the Mandarins Drum & Bugle Corps, in addition to working with high school marching programs throughout the Houston and Beaumont areas of Texas. He is also co-founder of The [Under]Graduate, a percussion podcast focused on student experiences and pathways toward success in the field of classical percussion.

Shane earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Classical Percussion Performance from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, studying with Svet Stoyanov, Leonardo Soto, and Pablo Rieppi. He received the Master of Music in Music Performance from James Madison University, where he studied with Casey Cangelosi, and the Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Lamar University, where he studied with Dr. Francisco Perez. He has also had the privilege of working with or studying under Taha Ahmed, Anders Ã…strand, Bill Bachman, James Campbell, Roger Carter, Mike Jackson, Benjamin Pyles, Tom Rarick, Aaron Trumbore, and Charles Mason.
