BJ Brooks

Director of the School of Music at West Texas A&M University

Dr. BJ Brooks has composed over one thousand varied works. His music is enjoyed by a wide range of performers, from drum corps to youth choirs around the world. His scores have been honored with numerous awards, has been included as educational material at several universities, frequents the UIL State Marching Band competition, is included in the acclaimed book series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band, and is found on repertoire lists including Texas’ PML. He has been featured and directed at conventions such as the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmaster Association, College Band Directors National Association, Society of Composers, The Midwest Clinic, and the International Society for Contemporary Music. BJ is an active clinician and adjudicator with concert ensembles and marching bands across the Southwest.

Dr. Brooks is the Director of the School of Music and Professor of Music Theory and Composition at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. In 2021 he became the 8th director of the Sound of West Texas Buffalo Marching Band, established in 1917. In addition, BJ is the pianist at First Methodist Church in Canyon, Texas. He has two grown children, also music educators, and resides with his wife on ten grassy acres south of Canyon.
